On Saturday, lovers of doughy pockets of fried (or boiled or steamed) goodness flocked to the Lower East Side for the 13th annual Chef One NYC Dumpling Festival in Sarah D. Roosevelt Park. The festival opened with a traditional performance by costumed dancers from the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute Dragon and Lion Dance Team. The day was dedicated to all-things-dumpling, from dumpling cooking classes (this year’s theme was “There’s a Chef in Everyone”) to a Dumpling Mama mascot, to the always-epic dumpling eating contest. This year featured wacky dumpling varieties such as buffalo chicken and kale and vegetable, alongside more traditional flavors of pork and kimchi and lemongrass. All proceeds were donated to the Food Bank for NYC.
