GOSSIP. Does Robert Smith Google himself or is he just a totally devoted Metro reader? What else can explain how this ’80s rock icon found a feature we’d written on Lady Sovereign a month ago? Seriously, not even our own mothers take that much interest in our writing.
Sov just dropped her second album, “Jigsaw,” and the first single off the album, “So Human,” uses a very generous sample of The Cure’s “Close to Me” — generous meaning that it makes up the entire melody of the song. We heard word that Smith didn’t like Sovereign’s interpretation of his original song, so we asked the rapper about the apparent diss. During our conversation, Lady Sov guessed Smith must be broke and needed the royalties because he heard the song before approving her right to use the sample.
However, thanks to Smith himself, we now know that this is totally untrue. In an e-mailed statement to us, Smith says, and this is a direct quote: “I APPROVED THE USE OF THE SAMPLE BECAUSE I LIKE THE TRACK.” The caps are his. (Love caps!) Thank you, Mr. Smith, for the clarification. “Boys Don’t Cry” changed our lives. Love you!
