What’s next for the Bruins?

After 10 agonizing games filled with near-misses, bad breaks and downright sloppy play, the Bruins ended their epic losing streak with a cathartic win on Sunday. Now that the distraction of that brutal run is over, here’s what to look for as the Bruins go forward:


1 The playoff chase. Believe it or not, despite their recent struggles, the Bruins are in the thick of the wide-open Eastern Conference playoff race. Going into last night’s games, they were tied with Philadelphia for the eighth and final playoff spot, just three points behind the sixth-place Canadiens.

Even during their losing streak, the Bruins weren’t playing terribly — they lost four of the 10 games in the shootout, and three more by one goal. If the Bruins can begin cashing in on their chances, they could become contenders.

2 Rask’s No. 1? Tuukka Rask appears to be emerging as the B’s No. 1 goalie after a fantastic effort on Sunday in Montreal. In fact, rumors are floating that the Bruins are shopping Tim Thomas in a potential trade. How will Rask respond to his increased role down the stretch?

The numbers certainly favor Rask: He has posted an 11-7-4 record with a .929 save percentage and an Eastern Conference-leading 2.02 GAA.

3 Health. The Bruins have struggled with injuries all year, but are returning to health, with defenseman Andrew Ference back Sunday.


4 Making a move? With Ilya Kovalchuk off to New Jersey, the focus is off a blockbuster trade and on to smaller moves. Will the Bruins seek to add depth, dump salary or stand pat?

In recent days, Michael Ryder, Dennis Wideman and Thomas have been mentioned as potential salary dumps for the B’s, but if they’re looking to make a move in the race, they’ll add a winger.
