Many celebrity women have opened up about their struggles with infertility, from Kim Kardashian to Chrissy Teigen — and many more in between. Today, we’re highlighting the famous men and women who have opted to use gestational surrogates. Here are their stories.
Amy Smart
The “Just Friends” actress and her husband, Carter Oosterhouse, welcomed baby girl Flora through surrogate. “After years of fertility struggles I give thanks today to our kind, loving surrogate for carrying her,” she wrote on Instagram.
Angela Bassett
The 59-year-old actress and husband Courtney B. Vance welcomed twins Slater Josiah and Bronwyn Golden via surrogate in 2006, after years of failed fertility treatment.
Camille Grammer
The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star welcomed her two children (with “Frasier” alum Kelsey Grammer) — Jude Gordon and Mason Olivia — via surrogate.“I’m just so grateful I had a wonderful surrogate who carried our two children,” she wrote.
Chris Daughtry
The “American Idol” alum, 37, and wife Deanna welcomed twins Adalynn Rose and Noah James via surrogate in 2010.
Dennis Quaid
Quaid, 63, and his wife Kimberly welcomed twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace via gestational carrier in 2007.
Dylan Lauren
The 43-year-old candy store entrepreneur — and daughter of Ralph Lauren — and husband Paul Arrouet welcomed twins Cooper and Kingsley via surrogate in 2015.
Elizabeth Banks
The “Hunger Games” actress, 43, opened up to Women’s Health about her decision to use a gestational surrogate in 2012. “Once my focus became the baby and not the pregnancy, it was a very easy decision.” She and her husband, Max Handelman, have welcomed two sons via surrogacy: Felix and Magnus.
Ellen Pompeo
The “Grey’s Anatomy” actress, 48, welcomed her second child via surrogate in 2014, and announced the news on Instagram. Opening up about the surrogacy experience, she told Jimmy Kimmel, “This is an incredible thing to do with your life, to give the gift of carrying someone’s child.”
Elton John
At first, the 70-year-old and husband David Furnish tried to adopt. Instead, they opted for surrogacy, and welcomed sons Zachary Jackson Levon and Elijah Joseph Daniel. “It was only through fate really,” said John of his newfound fatherhood.
George Lucas
The man behind “Star Wars,” 73, and wife Mellody Hobson welcomed daughter Everest in August 2013 via gestational surrogate.
Giuliana Rancic
The E! News host, 43, struggled to get pregnant with her husband, Bill Rancic, after discovering she had early-stage breast cancer. The couple opted to build their family via surrogate, and welcomed their son Duke in 2012.
Jeff Lewis
The 47-year-old “Flipping Out” star recalled a three or four year process to welcome daughter Monroe Christine via surrogate with partner Gage “There were so many obstacles along the way, but there’s a happy ending,” he told People in 2016.
Jordana Brewster
The “Fast and the Furious” actress, 37, welcomed sons Julian and Rowan via surrogacy with husband Andrew Form. “For me it wasn’t’ a choice,” she explained to Yahoo Parenting. “ I needed to use a surrogate.”
Kara DioGuardi
The former “American Idol” judge, 46, struggled getting pregnant with husband Mike McCuddy for five years. After discovering she was the carrier for the BRCA2 gene — and getting her uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure — the couple turned to a friend for gestational surrogacy. They welcomed their son Greyson in 2013.
Katey Sagal
The “Married with Children” and “Sons of Anarchy” alum decided to go the surrogacy route with her husband, Kurt Sutter, because she was too old to carry a child.
“We went through the whole in vitro fertilization process and our embryos were not really strong, but we thought, ‘Let’s give it a shot and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,’” she told People. They welcomed daughter Esme in 2007 — when Sagal was aged 52.
Kim Kardashian
The 37-year-old and her husband, Kanye West, opted for a surrogate to carry their third child, after Kardashian’s two high-risk pregnancies.
Lucy Liu
In August 2015, the 48-year-old “Elementary” star revealed via Instagram that she had welcomed a son named Rockwell Lloyd Liu. Her rep confirmed to Us Weekly that he had been carried by gestational surrogate.
“It just seemed like the right option for me because I was working and I didn’t know when I was going to be able to stop,” Liu told People of her decision to turn to gestational surrogacy. “I decided that was probably the best solution for me, and it turned out to be great.”
Matt Bomer
The “Magic Mike” actor, 40, and husband Simon Halls welcomed all three of their children — Kit and twins Henry and Walker — via gestational surrogate. “I just want to be hopefully somebody who helps shape these souls without changing how they came into the world,” he told People in 2014.
Nancy Juvonen
Juvonen, the wife of Jimmy Fallon, struggled to get pregnant for five years before welcoming two daughters — Winnie and Frances — via surrogate. “We tried before, we told people and then it didn’t happen,” Fallon said in 2013. “And it’s just really depressing. It’s really hard on everybody.”
Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent
Design gurus Berkus, 46, and Brent, 33, enlisted a surrogate to welcome daughter Poppy in 2015.
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
Harris, 44, and Burtka, 42, found an anonymous egg donor who had helped a same-sex couple before, and a gestational surrogate to carry twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace.
Nicole Kidman
After the 50-year-old “Big Little Lies” actress gave birth to daughter Sunday in 2008, she and husband Keith Urban welcomed daughter Faith via surrogacy in 2010. “No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier,” the couple said in a statement.
Ricky Martin
Because the adoption process is often long and arduous, singer Martin, 45, opted for gestational surrogacy to welcome twin boys Matteo wand Valentino. “Surrogacy was an intriguing and faster option,” he told People. “I thought, ‘I’m going to jump into this with no fear.’ I put my name on the list for one baby and then found out I got two!”
Robert DeNiro
Three of the 74-year-old’s six children were welcomed via surrogate: daughter Helen Grace and twins Julian and Aaron.
Ryan Murphy
The 51-year-old behind the likes of “Glee” and “American Horror Story” welcomed sons Ford and Logan Phineas via surrogate with husband David Miller. “It’s amazing to be two dads and we have a wonderful surrogate,” Murphy told E! News in 2014.
Sarah Jessica Parker
The 52-year-old “Divorce” actress and husband Matthew Broderick struggled to expand their family after the birth of their son James Wilkie. They chose to turn to gestational surrogacy and in 2009 welcomed twins Marion and Tabitha.
Tom Ford
The very private fashion designer, 56, and partner Richard Buckley reportedly welcomed son Alexander John via surrogate.
Tyra Banks
Banks, 43, opened up about her fertility issues to People, admitting that she had undergone IVF treatments in attempts to start a family with her then-boyfriend, Erik Asla. In January 2016, they welcomed their “miracle little boy,” York Banks Asla, via surrogate.
