3 players who helped/hurt themselves in Jets preseason win

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Second preseason game and some players helped their stock, hurt their stock in the New York Jets 30-22 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

With roster cuts looming, these three players helped their cause:

Jamari Lattimore –While he wasn’t on the roster bubble, a 41-yard interception return cemented his place on the 53-man roster. Lattimore is good in coverage and keeps improving with each training camp session. He had six tackles and one pass defended. Not a bad night for a guy who was an under-the-radar signing this offseason.

Jeremy Kerley –He has clearly fallen out of favor with the new coaching staff but Kerley helped his stock on Friday night. His punt returns were very average but he had two receptions for 38 yards, showing some big play ability. His skill set is still very special. The Jets need to find a bigger role for him.

Rontez Miles –The safety might be on the outside looking in to make the roster but he is a virtual lock to at least make the practice squad. With a fumble recovery for a touchdown and then a big tackle for a loss, Miles might be showing that he can stick to the roster. He’s great in run support and delivers a big hit but his pass coverage still needs work.

His very solid showing will definitely help his case to make this roster.

With so-so showings against the Falcons, three whose stock went down in the second game of preseason:

Kellen Davis –He had two first quarter penalties and then one in the second quarter, negating some good blocking. He didn’t register a catch in this game, surprising since he’s shown to be a reliable outlet in training camp.

Darrin Walls –While he isn’t likely to be cut, Walls may have dropped down the depth chart at cornerback with two holding calls in the second half. Marcus Williams, who has had a good training camp, might be inching closer to the two-deep at this point. Walls was solid in his tackling but lacks consistency. It showed tonight.

Matt Flynn –OK, the recently signed backup quarterback didn’t play but Bryce Petty showed really well as he threw for 168 yards and a touchdown. Flynn might be ready to play next week in the third preseason game against the New York Giants but Petty has grown over the past week and is looking a little more polished. Might just make the veteran Flynn expendable at some point.
