Camping is coming to New York City limits this spring.
Sleeping under the stars will be a reality when luxury tents by Collective Retreats pop up (for three years) on Governors Island.
The “unique, environmentally-friendly overnight lodging” will have views of the Statue of Liberty, and can accommodate up to 100 guests, with a range of options depending on how authentic you want your camping experience to be.
As in: According to one testimonial on Collective Retreats’ website, one of their tents (they currently operate in Hudson Valley and Yellowstone National Park) had wood floors, electricity, 1,500-thread-count sheets and a coffee bar. Hey, there’s a reason glamping is a trend.
Collective Retreats have run of six acres of the island, which will include free programs like concerts and wellness activities that are open to the public, as well as new dining options.
Governors Island opens for the season on May 1 through Oct. 31. As a staycation destination during the warmer months (though it’s exploring ways to remain open year-round), the island hosts tons of events, New York’s most scenic oyster/cocktail bar, outdoor fun including car-free bike paths, a zipline and climbing walls, and historic homes from when it was a military outpost during the Revolutionary War.
