Updated, 2:49 p.m.: Amtrak expects the overhead wire issue that has plagued commuters in and out of New York Penn Station for most of Monday will be resolved around 3:30 p.m., just in time for the evening rush hour, the agency told Metro.
Amtrak said that a messenger wire became separated and needed to be bonded back together.
NJ Transit train service in and out of Penn Station is “operating on or close to schedule with residual delays to trains already en route,” NJ Transit said on its website, adding that PATH cross-honoring customers at 33rd Street in Manhattan and at Hoboken and Newark ended at 2 p.m.
Original story, 10:58 a.m.: An overhead wire problem near New York Penn Station caused headaches — and delays of more than one hour — for many straphangers heading into New York City during Monday’s morning rush hour.
Amtrak told Metro the issue was east of Penn Station, but was not in or near Sunnyside Yard.
Due to the power issue, PATH was cross-honoring tickets for New Jersey Transit rail customers at 33rd Street in New York City and in Hoboken and Newark, while NJ Transit bus and private bus carriers were cross-honoring the agency’s rail tickets and passes.
NJ Transit said that it is experiencing up to 90-minute days into and out of Penn Station, while Amtrak said it is experiencing congestion delays of about 15 minutes.
The agency did not give an ETA as to when the power issue would be rectified, nor did it yet say what caused the power issue to occur.
