He hasn’t passed any substantive legislation and his political capital is dwindling, but at least President Trump has a bright future as a cartoon.
The animated Trump character from “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” has been spun off into his own 10-episode series, reports Variety.
The satirical series will air on Showtime, executive produced by Colbert, and will follow “Trump” and the “tru-ish adventures of Trump’s confidants and bon vivants — family, top associates, heads of government, golf pros and anyone else straying into his orbit — intrepidly exploring their histories and their psyches, revealing insights into what makes them so definitively Trumpian,” Showtime announced.
The character first popped up on Trump’s couch during the election to add commentary to events as they unfolded, along with an animated Hillary Clinton counterpart.
“I know a lot of people wanted to do this, and I’m honored that the Cartoon President invited our documentary crew into his private world,” said Colbert. “I’ve seen some of the footage, and I look forward to sharing the man behind the MAGA.”
Colbert is riding high at the moment. This month, “The Late Show” scored six Emmy nominations, and Colbert was announced as the host of the awards. “The Late Show” has closed the ratings gap with “The Tonight Show,” often besting Jimmy Fallon in total viewers. Colbert’s just concluded “Russia Week” — in which he traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg, conducting stunts like visiting the hotel room that was the site of the apocryphal Trump “pee pee tape” — saw the program best Fallon in total viewers by the largest margin since its debut.
