Noted anti-intellectual provocateur Ann Coulter played horsewoman of the apocalypse yesterday on Twitter, asking “At this point, who DOESN’T want Trump impeached?” and “Put a fork in Trump, he’s dead” after news emerged that the president and Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi had reached a deal to maintain the protections of DACA.
The administration announced last week that it was ending the program, which prevents the deportation of children of parents who immigrated to the U.S. illegally. It could result in the expulsion of up to 800,000 children from the U.S. Trump campaigned on ending DACA immediately, but after his tone softened once the announcement was made. Last week, he tweeted that he was giving Congress six months to come up with a legislative fix.
Today, Trump tweeted an outright reluctance to end protections for DACA children, called Dreamers. “Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military?” he asked.”Really!…They have been in our country for many years through no fault of their own – brought in by parents at young age. Plus BIG border security.”
After a Wednesday night dinner meeting with the president, Schumer and Pelosi said they had struck a deal to “enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”
The White House pushed back on the statement, saying that border security and DACA were discussed, but funding for Trump’s favored border wall had not been excluded.
That was perhaps in response to the immediate negative reaction to news of the agreement to protect DACA among Trump supporters and immigration hard-liners. Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa tweeted that if the reports were true, “Trump base is blown up, destroyed, irreparable, and disillusioned beyond repair. No promise is credible.”
