It’s Jets-union in the land of Gang Green with another wayward son returning home to New York. Wednesday’s introduction of Darrelle Revis by the New York Jets was followed Thursday with the signing of Antonio Cromartie, reuniting the best cornerback tandem in team history. Cromartie departed from the team last year but returns again to help complete an overhaul of the secondary. Cromartie was traded to the Jets in 2010 and his play on that team helped ensure a contract extension as well as his rise to becoming one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Last year after he left free agency, he had one of the best seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals where he once again was named to the Pro Bowl as his solid play in the secondary was a factor in the team’s return to the postseason. Now back in New York, he will be reunited with Jets head coach Todd Bowles, who was his defensive coordinator with the Cardinals in 2014.
The pursuit of Cromartie carried on from Wednesday night into Thursday, with Revis saying on his media conference call Wednesday that he hoped to be reunited with his former teammate. And for a Jets secondary that struggled a season ago, the addition of two primetime players in Revis and Cromartie suddenly makes a hapless team into a playoff contender.
