Have weekend errands to run? Take a couple minutes while you’re out to cheer for all the participants of the Avon 39. Everyone taking on the Avon Breast Cancer Walk is tackling The Big Apple, one step at a time, for a grand total of 39 — yes, 39 — miles. So the cheering is more than called for.
What is the Avon 39?
The Avon 39 is a charity walk that raises money for and awareness of breast cancer and breast cancer research. Avon 39 walks are held throughout the country each year, and New York City is always one of the locations. “It’s estimated that in New York, 16,310 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017, and that 2,410 people will die from the disease,” according to Avon. The organization and their event participants are walking to battle these numbers.
Each participant raises $1800 for the organization, which funnels the money to local and national organizations that help people get the healthcare they need to battle breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay. The help doesn’t stop at financial assistance, either. The programs include language help, food and transportation assistance as well.
Where you can expect foot traffic during the Avon 39
You don’t have to deal with any street closures for the Avon 39, but you can expect heavy foot traffic through the walk route. We’re talking about a lot of streets here, too, since the Avon Breast Cancer Walk starts at 6:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday morning and runs through Sunday.
