While debating the differences between his beloved “Sherlock” character and the main alien on “Doctor Who” on Chris Hardwicke’s Nerdist podcast, Benedict Cumberbatch used a few choice words sure to get the fan-fiction writers out there all hot and bothered. “He talks fast and is clever. That is literally the only bracket they share,” Cumberbatch says of the two iconic British characters. “They’ve got different dress senses, different taste in the sex of their partners …” And there it is. While Cumberbatch more innocently meant that Holmes is always aided by a male Dr. Watson (except on the U.S. version, “Elementary”), Doctor Who more commonly keeps a female assistant, though not always. Still, feel free to let your imagination run away with you. Now, not to get too nerdy on you, but some might suggest the sexuality of the Doctor was all but confirmed as completely fluid and freewheeling back in the first and second seasons of the new series, based on what he’s told Captain Jack Harkness and William Shakespeare. Sherlock, on the other hand, is likely too much of a sociopath to have a sexuality, girlfriends and his interactions with Moriarity notwithstanding. OK, I’ll shut up now.
