Two of the best albums to come out of 2016 were from the Knowles sisters. (Try to challenge us on that, we dare you.) From Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and its range of musical genres, complex response to adultery and reexamination of what it means to be a black woman in America today, to Solange’s “A Seat at the Table”—a soulful, R&B-infused meditation on issues of race, womanhood, and individuality. So imagine our delight when both sisters sat down for Interview Mag today, where the elder gave her lil sis the Q&A treatment. While you should read every word, here are a few highlights from the sister-sister sesh: According to Beyonce, even from a young age, Solange could spot “it”.
“Growing up, you were always attracted to the most interesting fashion, music, and art. You were obsessed with Alanis Morissette and Minnie Riperton and mixing prints with your clothes … when you were only 10 years old. You would lock yourself in a room with your drum set and a record player and write songs.” She loves “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”.
It’s her answer to Beyonce’s question, “What makes you laugh the hardest?” She also references it in a response to how growing up in Houston inspired her: “I love that show and think it’s so brilliant because it’s the woman that was represented in my childhood in Houston. It makes me feel so at home.” Her answer when Beyonce asks how she did as a big sister:
“You did a kickass job. You were the most patient, loving, wonderful sister ever. In the 30 years that we’ve been together, I think we’ve only really, like, butted heads … we can count on one hand.”
