Body and mind: Boston yogis add at-home life coaching to their repertoire

Bostonians who are wary of opening up to a psychiatrist might want to check out a new form of self-help that combines yoga with life coaching.

Health Yoga Life on Temple Street recently started offering Total Life Change Plan, a $300 per month program that offers clients unlimited yoga and two hour-long life coaching phone calls.

While yoga’s ancient health and healing powers are old news, life coaching is something that has gained momentum in recent years.

“It boils down to conversations, which happen over the phone to accommodate people’s busy lifestyles,” said Aida Bielkus, an instructor and life coach at Health Yoga Life.

Conversations range from specific problems, like addictions to stress, work or relationships – pretty much anything that needs hashing out.

“The topics vary, but it always boils down to us looking very deeply at where are they not taking emotional responsibility for their own lives,” Biekus said. “It really supports ones change from the inside out.”

Beacon Hill resident Liz Swenton said she has tried traditional therapy, but had little luck, so last month she decided to give Bielkus’ program a shot.

“Therapy did a lot of drilling on the past. I’m going to be 31 next week, I don’t want to talk about something that happened when I was five-years-old,” said Swenton, who also admits that a perk of the TLC program is that she gets her coaching from home, while wearing sweatpants.

“But this is a good way to cope with stress. It’s a way to slow down and observe how you’re thinking, and maybe alter your thinking to better yourself.”
