A community in Burlington is in shock after a statue of the Virgin Mary and several other religious statues were vandalized and damaged Monday night, WCVB reported. The vandalism occurred at St. Margaret Parish located at 111 Winn St. sometime before Tuesday morning.

According to The Boston Herald, investigators found the two statues “had their hands severed and multiple sets of rosary beads removed” and that a statue of the Virgin Mary had both hands removed and its head severed. RELATED:Judge shuts downBoston’s attempt to shorten St. Patrick’s Day parade “This is a deeply disturbing crime committed against a religious institution in our community during a major holiday season,” Burlington Police Chief Michael Kent wrote in a statement. “We will undertake a thorough investigation and use all assets at our disposal to find those responsible and hold them accountable.” Police are still investigating the incident.
