Dec. 1 marks the 27th World Aids Day, a global recognition to those fighting and those lost to HIV/AIDS. All this week, there will be events, gatherings, lectures and vigils for the fight against AIDS. Rep. Gloria Fox and Rep. Sarah Peake are hosting the 5th annual “Glimmer of Hope” event at the state house at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The Boston Pride organization is co-sponsoring the AIDS Memorial Quilt Exhibit at UMass Boston at the campus center. The 54-ton, hand-sewn tapestry is a memorial to the thousands of people lost to AIDS around the world since 1987, when the quilt was only a 3 by 6’ panel. Since then, it has grown into 48,000 panels that commemorate a life lost to the virus. The event will begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday and will run until 11 p.m.
Boston University will host a section of the quilt as well. On their campus, they will be hosting free and confidential testing from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. There will also be a candlelight vigil for those lost throughout the years on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. and a panel discussion on the Face of AIDS in Boston at the Conference Auditorium at 7 p.m.
