The nation’s economy has some cities facing large poverty levels, and a report posted by the site onlyinyourstate.com — which used data from the United States Census Bureau — points out the 10 cities in Massachusetts that are struggling to get by the most.

The list was compiled from information off of the 2009-2013 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, an ongoing survey that covers a range of topics about social, economic, demographic and housing characteristics.

To compile the list of the poorest cities in the state, onlyinyourstate.com used each Massachusetts town’s per capita income — which is the average income earned per person in a year — median household income and poverty level.

  1. Lawrence: Per capita income: $16,987; Median Household income: $32,851; Living below poverty level: 29.2 percent
    (According to onlyinyourstate.com, Lawrence is also listed as one of the poorest cities in the whole nation.)
  2. Springfield: Per capita income: $18,133; Average Household income: $34,311; Living below poverty level: 29.4percent.
  3. Amherst: Per capita income: $19,796; Average Household income: $53,191; Living below poverty level: 48percent.
    (According to onlyinyourstate.com, this data is based on results from North Amherst. Amherst Center has a poverty rate of 34.1%.)
  4. Holyoke: Per capita income: $19,968; Median Household income: $31,628; Living below poverty level: 31.5 percent.
  5. Chelsea: Per capita income: $20,617; Median Household income: $47,291; Living below poverty level: 23.7percent.
  6. New Bedford: Per capita income: 21,056; Median Household income: 35,999; Living below poverty level: 23.3percent.
  7. Fall River: Per capita income: 21,257; Median Household income: 33,211; Living below poverty level: 23.3percent.
  8. North Adams: Per capita income: 21,263; Median Household income: $38,317; Living below poverty level: 21.4percent.
  9. Southbridge: Per capita income: $21, 579. Median Household income: $42,471. Living below poverty level: 17.2percent.
