Bronx landlord accused of stabbing tenant over unpaid rent

He paid for his rent with his life.

A Bronx landlord was charged with murder Thursday after stabbing to death a deadbeat tenant in front of the man’s 12-year-old son, investigators said.

Zakir Khan, 44, had multiple stab wounds to his chest and was hanging onto life in front of his home on Logan Avenue in Throggs Neck when police found him at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. He died shortly after being transported to Jacobi Hospital.

His attacker is Taha Mahran, 51, a city transit worker with no criminal history, police said. Mahran had waited in his car until Kahn returned home from the library with his son, a witness told police.

When Kahn and his son came home, Mahran grabbed Kahn by the coat and knocked him to the ground, plunging a kitchen knife into his chest repeatedly, while the boy stood a few feet away, police said.

Mahran was charged with murder, manslaughter and possession of a criminal weapon after he turned himself in at the 45th Precinct. He was drenched in blood, the Daily News reported.

“I just stabbed someone with a knife,” he told police at the station, the Daily News reported. “He’s up the block,” and added that he had thrown the knife into a sewer.

Mahran had become enraged with Kahn, a former real estate broker, for allegedly dodging nine months of rent. He went to court to have him evicted, but proceedings dragged, and the conflict between the two men escalated. Kahn’s wife told police that they had nearly come to blows in the past.
