Brooklyn man gets 110 years to life in prison for shootout with police

A Brooklyn man convicted of opening fire on five police officers after barricading himself in his apartment in 2012 was sentenced to 110 years to life in prison on Thursday.

Nakwon Foxworth, 36, of Sheepshead Bay was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, three counts of attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer, three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of second-degree menacing following an April trial. He was sentenced as a persistent violent felony offender.

On April 8, 2012, Nakwon Foxworth got into a verbal argument with movers who left items in the hallway of his Sheepshead Bay apartment building and later pulled a gun on them, according to testimony.

Foxworth then holed up in his apartment with his girlfriend and their 10-month-old son, still armed with a gun. Foxworth let the woman and baby leave the apartment about an hour after officers arrived on scene, and then opened fire on five officers.

Officer Matthew Granahan was shot in the leg, Officer Michael Keenan was shot in the knee and Officer Kenneth Ayala was shot in the pelvis and foot. All of the officers recovered.

Foxworth was shot when the officers returned fire. He was acquitted on multiple counts of attempted murder at trial.

“This convicted felon could have killed those five brave police officers who literally risked their lives to save a woman and her 10-month-old child. He’s not fit to remain in our society and deserves the sentence that he got today,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement.
