Mike Lombardi has a long history with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, and anything he says related to the secret world of the Pats carries some weight.

This week on his “GM Shuffle” podcast, Lombardi mentioned the possibility of Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels taking over as head coach of the Giants.
“This is a level you’ve sunk to that I don’t think you ever thought you could get to. If you’re John Mara you might really need to reboot,” Lombardi said in the wake of Big Blue’s loss to the Jets. “I think that [Mara] loves Bill Belichick, and rightly so.
“Are the Giants committed to going another year with Pat Shurmur coaching the quarterback? Are they committed to going another year with this scheme? Are they committed to going another year with Dave Gettleman running the draft?
“If you’re John Mara running the team – and this is corporate America – you’ve got to say to yourself, ‘Hey, I’ve got to make some changes. I’ve got to fix this thing like Jed York fixed it in San Francisco. I’m going to hire somebody, give him complete control, and let him build it in the model.
“I think he’s got to make one phone call and he’s got to hire Josh McDaniels, because that saves his quarterback and it might save his franchise.”
Belichick has long pointed his assistant coaches in certain directions, and part of the reason McDaniels backed out with the Colts was because Belichick did not believe Indianapolis’ organizational structure was great under owner Jim Irsay.
Belichick’s appreciation for the Mara family is the exact opposite, as Belichick never misses an opportunity to toss verbal bouquets their way.
Basically, if the Giants believe McDaniels is the right man for the job – McDaniels will be on the first flight to Newark.
Other teams that McDaniels will be linked to this winter are the Browns and Jets.
McDaniels was said to be “enthusiastically interested in the Cleveland opening,” last winter – according to Steve Doerschuk of The Canton Repository. But general manager John Dorsey ultimately decided to go with Freddie Kitchens for the position.
McDaniels grew up in Ohio and has been said to covet the Cleveland job for years as he knows what bringing a Super Bowl title to that community would mean. McDaniels was also high on Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield in the 2018 NFL Draft as the Patriots nearly pulled off a trade to move up in the draft to select the QB.
One of the dark-horses to land McDaniels is the Jets, who may be ready to clean house after just one season of Adam Gase.
It’s no secret that Belichick and the Jets have not gotten along over the years, but the cold war may be over. Belichick actually made a trade with Gang Green this past September when they shipped Demaryius Thomas south.
