The first episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” season 9 confirmed that, even though her character divorced Larry David towards the end of season 6, Cheryl Hines will still play a prominent part in the show.
In the aftermath of their separation, that didn’t always look like it would be the case. In fact, it was something that Hines herself worried about. The actress made this admission to me last week on the red carpet for the return of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” after a six-year absence.
When I asked Hines to recall her original thoughts after being told Cheryl would be leaving Larry, she responded, “I wasn’t thrilled about it.” But the actress only had herself to blame for the divorce, because she was the one that actually gave Larry the idea for how the pair should separate.
“Especially since, I knew a woman who had that experience on a plane, where she thought her plane was going down and she called her husband and her husband said, ‘I can’t talk right now.’ And I told Larry that story, and that’s the story that ended up breaking us up on the show.”
Thankfully for Hines the divorce didn’t completely bring her tenure on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to an end. Far from it, as Hines was a key fixture in the remaining episodes of season 6, and the entire arc of season 7 revolved around Larry trying to win her back by orchestrating a “Seinfeld” reunion. Sure, Cheryl only had a bit part in season 8, but her appearance in the first episode of season 9 suggests she will still be a constant in the life of Larry.
