A long-vacant tract of land along the Harlem River in the South Bronx is on its way to becoming a mixed-use destination, the New York City Economic Development Corporation announced Friday.
Known as Bronx Point, the site will be home to the Universal Hip-Hop Museum, public green space, a multiplex theater, a food and beverage hall curated by Anna Castellani of Foragers Markets that will feature Bronx-based small food vendors, education space, more than 600 units of affordable housing and more.
Bronx Point will be located in the Lower Concourse neighborhood near Mill Pond Park, the 145th Street Bridge to Harlem, Bronx Terminal Market and Yankee Stadium.
“Over the last two years, NYCEDC has worked with the South Bronx community to address the area’s most pressing needs: affordable housing and waterfront access,” NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett said in a statement. “Today, we are excited to announce the activation of this long-vacant waterfront site with high-quality public open space, over 600 units of permanently affordable housing, and a range of cultural facilities that pay homage to the boogie down Bronx.”
The winning proposal for Bronx Point is a joint venture between L+M Development Partners and Type A Projects.
More than 100 jobs are expected to be added to the South Bronx when the destination opens, and its first phase will create more than 900 construction jobs. HireNYC, an NYCEDC workforce program, will help connect residents to the available opportunities.
There is no ETA as to when Bronx Point will open, but it is currently in the public land use review process and has been approved by Community Board 4, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the City Planning Commission.
