Crunch Time: Gilbert Arenas sounds off on NBA All-Star Game

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas knows what’s up. Unless you’re on the level of a Michael Jordan or a LeBron or a Kobe, please don’t show up to NBA All-Star Weekend. No one wants to see you. We don’t need to see you, Paul Millsap, or you, Carmelo Anthony, or you, Marc Gasol, this coming weekend. Make way for the young bucks in the actual All-Star game. No one watches that rookie – sophomore game, as it’s almost as bad as that “Celebrity” game on Friday night where the biggest names are Justin Bieber’s roadie, and Kevin Hart.

Here is the brilliance that Arenas posted on his Instagram this week: “ATTENTION OLD BITCHES 34 AND UP. Don’t bring your asses to ALL STAR WEEKEND 2017. Let these young Hoes enjoy life. You old hoes had a chance when SHAQ and KOBE were winning. Take your bitter ass on a TOM JOYNER cruise. Leave NBA ALL STAR WEEKEND alone.”

Sterling reputation

If you’re sick of the Charles Oakley – James Dolan feud, don’t be. It’s simply the best drama to happen in Madison Square Garden since The Rock beat 29 other men to win the 2000 Royal Rumble.

One day after Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green said that Dolan operated the Knicks with a “slave master mentality,” Oakley himself doubled down on the Dolan hatred.

Oakley compared the current Knicks owner to former LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling – who was forced to sell his team a few years back for making racist comments on an audio tape.

“He’s been around a long time,” Oakley said of Dolan, who – like Sterling – had an ugly reputation in league circles before things boiled over. “I ain’t heard nothing good about him.”

In the interview with Sports Illustrated’s Maggie Gray, Oakley also implied that his meeting earlier this week with NBA commish Adam Silver, Michael Jordan and Dolan was a dog and pony show and that the league was just looking to make itself look good before All-Star weekend.

Forever Young

You expected Johnny Manziel to make a comeback attempt in 2017 as he’s still just 24-years-old. But the NFL QB super-bust from the previous decade wants back in as well. Former Titans, Eagles, Bills, Packers and Browns QB Vince Young signed with an agent this week in an attempt to make a pro football comeback. The now 33-year-old Young hasn’t thrown a pass in a regular season game since 2011, so we’re talking longer than a long shot here.

Young is likely desperate for an NFL paycheck as he famously used to buy the entire Titans team meals and booze at the Cheesecake Factory after every game when he was the starter. He also once reportedly bought 120 tickets for one Southwest Airlines flight so that he could “fly private.” Needless to say, the $26 million he earned in his NFL career went quickly.

Phatty vs. Phillies

Say this for Chris Christie. He’s a loyal sports fan. So much so that he will take any and all opportunities to shred the fanbase of opposing teams even if that fanbase makes up a good chunk of the people he “serves.” For the second time in a month, the New Jersey governor tore into Philly sports fans, this time picking on Phillies fans specifically.

“The Phillies suck,” Chris said on SNY. “Let’s start with that. They’re from Philadelphia. They’re an awful team. They’re an angry, bitter fan base and it’s not safe for civilized people to go to Citizens Bank Park if you want to root for the other team. Ya gotta believe what? Ya gotta believe we’re awful people!”

There at the end, the large lawmaker was making reference to the Phillies putting the phrase, “Ya Gotta Believe” on a wall in their spring training facility. Of course, “Ya Gotta Believe” is a slogan most closely associated with the Mets.

Trade winds

There are two levels of NFL rumors these days: regular rumors and Schefter rumors. This week, ESPN’s lord of breaking football news, Adam Schefter, said the most interesting thing ever uttered on the “Mike and Mike” show. He believes the Patriots will, in fact, trade backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason.

“There are different people in the Patriots organization that have different schools of thought here,” Schefter said. “I talked to one person a month ago who said he would be floored if they trade Garoppolo. But I just think there’s going to be too much interest, and somebody’s eventually going to offer enough to pry him loose.

“There are enough teams out there with a need at the quarterback position … it’ll be up to some team to convince the Patriots to offer enough to want to part ways with him.”

Schefter specifically mentioned the Browns and Bears as the two most likely landing spots for “Handsome Jimmy.”
