Cuomo announces $672.9M in funding for NYC hospitals, clinics

Health care facilities throughout New York City will soon go through major transformations that will help offer vital services and meet the needs of residents, state officials said

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday that $672.9 million in funding would be awarded to 73 health care projects — with the goal of dramatically renovating and improving the delivery of health care throughout the New York City.

The city’s funding is part of New York State’s total investment of $1.5 billion to help health care providers statewide. The money will go toward important capital and infrastructure improvements at hospitals and clinics.

“We have a responsibility to continue to make critical capital and infrastructure improvements that transform our health care system into one of sustainability with a deep focus on improving patient care and delivery of vital services.” Cuomo said. “This funding allows them to do just that and is yet another example of how New York is leading the nation in adapting to meet 21st century health care needs.”

The grant awards for the projects are made through the Capital Restructuring Financing Program and Essential Health Care Provider Support Program — created to support the goals of the $7.3 billion Delivery System Reform Incentive Program (DSRIP).

DSRIP aims to reduce health care costs, improve the health of New Yorkers, reduce avoidable hospital admissions and emergency room visits by 25 percent by 2020, and guarantee the financial sustainability of safety net health care providers.

“Restructuring New York’s vast health care system will require extensive structural changes to our facilities as well as new approaches to the delivery of health care,” said Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State health commissioner. “These funds will help us balance system wide reforms with the preservation of essential health care services during this time of change.”

The New York City regional projects that will receive funding include Montefiore Medical Center, which is getting over $10 million for the expansion of a school health program; Uptown Health Care Management, Inc. which received over $11 million for its primary care expansion; and Wyckoff Heights Medical Center which received over $58 million in funding.

The largest amount of funding — over $300 million — was awarded to the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation for improvements in the IT system, patient engagement and contact center, and much more.

“These capital awards will enable hospitals to transform their care delivery models and provide better, more efficient patient care via projects that will improve infrastructure, promote integrated health systems, and expand primary care capacity,” said Kenneth E. Raske, president of the Greater New York Hospital Association.
