Mayor Bill de Blasio is asking New Yorkers to be a little more selfless.
The mayor’s office announced a campaign on Monday aimed at encouraging New Yorkers to volunteer, and informing them of the benefits of serving others.
The tagline “Volunteering. Good for you. Good for your city,” will run in 1,000 subway cars and 75 bus shelters. According to the mayor’s office, about 18 percent of New Yorkers are volunteers, and de Blasio is hoping to raise that number to 50 percent.
The campaign, developed pro-bono by creative services agency Sid Lee, has identified three key areas more volunteers are needed: supporting young people, reducing hunger and engaging seniors, according to the mayor’s office.
“New York City’s greatest strength is in our people, and NYC Service has done a tremendous job in leveraging our most valuable resource and connecting more New Yorkers to service opportunities,” de Blasio said. “With today’s launch of this volunteer promotion campaign, we urge more of our fellow New Yorkers to make a difference in their neighborhoods and impact the lives of others through service … volunteering can be a game-changer in communities throughout the five boroughs.”
