Megastar Chris Brown once again has made headlines, but not for anything related to his talent. The singer was recently arrested in Paris on allegations of rape from a 24-year-old woman. This is not Brown’s first run-in with the law, in fact, the performer who was once deemed “the new Michael Jackson” has been in and out of cuffs for years. Chris Brown was on his A-game in 2008, he had hit singles, plenty of press and a gorgeously talented girlfriend- Rihanna. All of that changed in 2009 when Brown assaulted Rihanna just hours before the 2009 Grammy Awards. “Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand,” a police report of the incident read. “He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.’s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.”
Soon after the incident pictures of Rihanna’s beaten face surfaced, the public’s image of Brown was immediately changed and he pleaded guilty to the felony assault charge and was placed on 5-years probation. Rihanna later appeared on Oprah’s show and said she forgave the troubled singer because he “made that mistake because he needed help.”
Years later, Brown discussed the incident in the 2017 documentary Welcome to My Life: The Official Chris Brown Documentary. “I remember she tried to kick me, just like her beating s–t, but then I really hit her. With a closed fist, like I punched her and it busted her lip. And when I saw it I was in shock, I was like, f–k why did I hit her like that? I went from being on top of the world, No. 1 songs, being kind of like America’s sweetheart to being Public Enemy No. 1. I felt like a f–king monster. I was thinking about suicide, I wasn’t sleeping, I barely ate.” The incident seemed to kick off the history of all of the Chris Brown arrests.
In 2011 Brown has a meltdown in his dressing room after an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America where she asked him about the assault that happened in 2009. Brown later apologized saying he had to “let off steam.” A year later in February 2012, Brown is accused of trying to steal a woman’s phone while she attempted to take a picture of him outside of a Miami nightclub. The case was later dismissed.
Then in June 2012, police investigate a fight involving Brown, Drake (a friend of Rihanna) and their entourages at a New York City club. The fight leaves Brown injured and he disses the In My Feelings rapper over the fight in one of his later tracks.
In June 2013 Brown was arrested for assaulting a woman in a San Diego nightclub. The woman told police he pushed her in the VIP section and she later filed a lawsuit against him. But that’s not all that happened in June 2013, Brown was also charged that month with a hit-and-run. The charges were eventually dropped but Brown unhappily had to complete an additional 1,000 hours of community labor while the DA agreed to dismiss a request to rescind his probation over his hit-and-run charge. “Ni–a done 6 months community service wit police and the DA racist ass crying to the judge that I didn’t do it. F–k the SYSTEM!”Brown tweeted.
A few months later in October the Forever singer and his bodyguard are arrested and charged for an assault that occurred with a man outside of a Washington D.C. hotel. The charge is dropped to a misdemeanor and Brown then enters rehab for anger management. But it didn’t last long, in November Brown was discharged after throwing a rock through his mother’s car window while she was visiting him. Brown is ordered to complete 90 days of anger management treatment at another facility, at least 24 hours of community labor a week and also mandatory drug testing.
A few months later the facility Brown stayed in releases a statement about the recent string of Chris Brown arrests. The release claimed he “became aggressive and acted out physically” due to untreated bipolar II disorder, “severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD.” A month later a judge tells Brown he has to serve time in jail for being kicked out of rehab.
Brown is in and out of court over his probation until March 2015, when his probation is officially lifted. “IM OFF PROBATION!!!!!!!! Thank the Lord!!!!!!” Brown tweeted. “Hopefully this is my last day in court….. Pray for me..”
Two months after he tweeted he was off probation a man claims that Brown beat him during an altercation at a late-night basketball game at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. The man later decided not to press charges. Then in January of 2016 Las Vegas police are called in again after a woman claims Brown assaulted her and tried to take her phone while in a hotel room. Brown denied it all.
In June 2016 Brown is in jail again for a brief period of time in Amsterdam for driving a dirt bike without a license plate. He is soon released and even claimed the authorities in Amsterdam were “cool as s–t.” Two months later Baylee Curran (Miss California Regional 2016) claimed that Brown threatened her with a gun while she was in his kitchen admiring a piece of jewelry. The singer was charged with assault with a deadly weapon but was released from jail after posting a $250,000 bond. The lack of evidence regarding the case caused charges to be dropped.
In April 2017 police open an investigation after a photographer claimed Brown punched him in the face outside of a Florida nightclub. Brown stays out of trouble for the duration of 2017, but then in May 2018, a woman claimed that Brown sexually assaulted her while she was in his home.
Also during the past couple of years throughout all of the Chris Brown arrests, two women filed restraining orders against Brown claiming that he threatened to kill them. One was Brown’s ex Karrueche Tran, the other a woman named Cassandra who Brown swears he doesn’t know.
