Charlize Theron totally surprised she’s engaged

Considering that during her nine-year relationship with Stuart Townsend she was vehemently against walking down the aisle, it’s understandable that even Charlize Theron was not expecting she’d be engaged to new beau Sean Penn after just over a year of dating. She’s shocked by the development, I tell you. Or rather, she tells you, via Esquire:

“I think that for both of us there was never a moment where we thought that this — what we have today — would ever even be a possibility. Ever, ever, ever,” she tells the magazine. “I think we’re both finding ourselves at this moment in our lives kind of shocked. Both of us. Just when you think you know how things are supposed to go down, life just kicks you in the ass and guess what? You don’t have a clue.”

That … is a pretty unpleasant way to describe getting engaged, but maybe that’s just what life with Penn is like?
