is the Lion King on Netflix?

Released in 1994, The Lion King became the 35th highest grossing film of all time and the third highest grossing film in Walt Disney Animation Studios. 90’s babies around the world (myself included) watched this film until our parents were begging us to stop. We screamed Circle of Life at the top of our lungs (it’s a bop), we cried and we laughed. Now our childhood nostalgia is coming full circle (see what we did there?) when the remake comes out on Jul. 19, 2019. But where can we stream the original? Is The Lion King on Netflix

What is The Lion King about?

If you haven’t seen the animated hit yet (it’s okay, no judgement), The Lion King is about Simba, a young cub who is heir to his father’s throne. But his wicked uncle Scar, who is jealous of his brother Mufasa, seeks to usurp the throne for himself. He plots to kill Mufasa and Simba, but only Simba escapes.

He flees the Pride Lands, believing that he killed his own father. He later meets Timon and Pumbaa, his friends that will help him take back his rightful place as King and learn to live “Hakuna Matata” (it means no worries).

This animated film stars Matthew Broderick as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Nathan Lane as Timon, Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa, and Moira Kelly as Nala. The phenomenal music is by the legendary Elton John with lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by Hans Zimmer.

Whatever your opinion is on animated movies, this is one film you have to see.

Is The Lion King on Netflix?

So now that we’ve raved about the movie, we must answer the question: Is The Lion King on Netflix? While Netflix still owns many Disney movies to stream at the moment, The Lion King is not available at this time. You can buy or rent the movie on iTunes, Google Play or YouTube

But hope is not lost! Disney is attempting to compete with Netflix and Warner Bros. by launching their own streaming service, in September 2019. This means that all movies that owned by Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, will only be on the Disney+ streaming platform.

So, go watch your favorite Disney movies on Netflix while they’re still there, and wait patiently for The Lion King to be on Disney+ in September!
