Most TV shows like to shake things up for their season finales, but no one does it like “The Vampire Diaries.” It’s the only show on TV where the question isn’t “who lives and who dies?” but rather “who stays dead?” and “who changes species?”
Last night’s season finale was no exception. Spoiler alert: Bonnie’s a ghost, Elena and Damon are together, and Katherine’s now a human. But executive producer Julie Plec says Katherine was actually their third choice for devampage.
“I think in the back of our heads we always intended to heal Elena,” she told E! Online. “But the instant that we actually made the decision to move forward with Elena the first thing we realized was she would of course be the one person we couldn’t cure because it was just too easy.”
She added that they later moved on to a plan to unvampirize Damon – but when fans quickly guessed their intention, they abandoned it in favor of humanizing wicked Katherine instead. Maybe Nina Dobrev, who plays both Katherine and Elena, wanted to maintain her accustomed vampire-to-human ratio.
She’s not the only one who will have a dual role next season – Stefan was revealed to be Silas’s doppelganger. Plec says Paul Wesley is excited to get to play the bad guy for once.
