Finn Jones’ Danny Rand has a lot on his plate going into Iron Fist season 2, which premieres this weekend on Netflix.
The mystical Marvel superhero and billionaire martial arts master is dealing with the fallout from season one, as well as the shocking conclusion to last year’s Defenders team-up miniseries, which brought Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Daredevil together to save the Big Apple. During the climactic final episode, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock shared a touching moment with Danny, effectively passing the mission of Daredevil over to the kung fu-kicking hero prior to his apparent death in the finale.
Jones tells Metro that the death of Daredevil will have a huge impact on Danny leading into Iron Fist season 2.
“At the beginning of season two, he’s out on the streets, he’s taking up Daredevil’s mantle of protecting downtown New York,” says Jones. “He’s got this mission on his plate and he’s throwing himself at it full force. He’s more powerful. He’s more confident. But with that, he’s a little bit more destructive and he’s kind of pushing himself a little too far.”

According to comic book lore, Iron Fist actually suits up as the Man Without Fear for a brief period. Although fans would love to see a similar situation happen on screen, Jones reveals that he won’t be wearing the Daredevil costume this season, but would love to in the future.
“Unfortunately not this season,” says Jones. “Who knows where these stories can go. That run of the comics where Danny does put on the suit is really iconic and it’s a great part of the Iron Fist Daredevil mythology. I can only hope that one day down the line that we have the chance to tell that story, because I think it would be really interesting.”
While he won’t suit up as his fellow Defender, Danny will definitely kick more butt during Iron Fist season 2. A tight production schedule and a nasty injury made it difficult for Jones to go all out with the action sequences for his previous appearances as the hero, however this time around, the former Game of Thrones star had plenty of time to work on his fighting, and it shows.
Jones credits his improved martial arts skills to the addition of a new fight coordinator, as well as the five month preparation time. He hopes to get the chance to take things to an even higher level should an Iron Fist season 3 get the greenlight.
“From the moment I was cast as Iron Fist, I’ve always wanted to go balls to the wall,” says Jones. “I’ve always wanted to commit to the role and give 110 percent of my energy to the show and the character.”
“The second season was way more better planned out,” he adds. “I’m really, really happy with the way everything turned out. I’ve seen most of the fight sequences and I’m blown away by them. It’s amazing to see how well they’ve all come together. Honestly, I can’t wait to hopefully get to do more if there’s a season three.”
In addition to taking the fight scenes up a notch, Iron Fist season 2 also raises the stakes storywise, according to Jones. Danny is forced to deal with the blowback from his decision to not tell his friend Joy (Jessica Stroup) that her father was still alive last season. He must go head-to-head with Davos (Sacha Dhawan) as well, his “brother” who believes that he should be the rightful heir to the Iron Fist mantle. Joy and Davos will team up to take Danny down, enlisting the dangerous Typhoid Mary (Alice Eve) to help them in their endeavor.
“It’s much more nuanced, it’s much more complex,” says Jones. “It feels more rooted.”
As for what’s to come after Iron Fist season 2, there are a ton of possiblities, but nothing set in stone yet. A follow-up to the Defenders could happen should the stars align, although Marvel and Netflix haven’t made any official announcements about a second season. Should it return, Jones would love to see some of the original Defenders from comics join the team, as well as a certain X-Men.
“I think Hulk would be cool and I like Wolverine as well,” says Jones.
Considering the Iron Fist Luke Cage partnership in the comics and Jones’ brief appearance in Luke Cage season 2, the actor would love to team up with Mike Coulter for a Heroes for Hire series, especially if the Daughters of the Dragon Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) and Misty Knight (Simone Missick) are involved.
“I would love to see Heroes for Hire,” says Jones “I’d love to see a television show where the Heroes for Hire and the Daughters of the Dragon team up.”
He adds, “Hopefully, fingers crossed, Netflix will commission a Heroes for Hire series.”
