Is Modern Family ending? For many fans, that would be like the cancellation of the original Law & Order: no one wants it, and we can’t understand why it’s even an option.
Despite the millions of devoted viewers, Modern Family is preparing for the big curtain drop. The hit ABC show was confirmed for two more seasons, that would be seasons 9 and 10, after lengthy negotiations — but it looks like that’s where this comedy train comes to a stop.

For co-creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, though, the run has been nothing but sweet. “Our original goal was to just stay on the air,” Levitan told Deadline. Obviously that changed quickly, as the show became a runaway success for the two. When the two finally felt like they were really steering the ship with the show, even before the newly commissioned seasons were on the table, Levitan felt like “10 sounded like a nice round number.” When pushed about whether the show could potentially run past 10 seasons, Levitan made it clear that the expectation is for it to end there.
So, is Modern Family ending, for real?
Yes. The when is all but decided, but the how is a bit looser.
Long-time Modern Family fans probably won’t be disappointed with the direction, though. Although the episodes themselves won’t be planned until the later half of season 9, Levitan shared, he said that they have “talked about areas that we want to go and tonally what we want to do.”
Although many ideas have been bounced around — so don’t go taking this as a guarantee — Levitan says, “I think we will end the show the way we started it in the pilot, with a big family event.” We like the idea of the family-centric series coming full circle, from the adoption announcement in season 1 episode 1 to a final family get-together in the show finale, and it would stay true to the show’s tradition. After all, we’ve seen everything from the casual family dinner to big holiday feasts, graduations to anniversaries.
But again, they’ve discussed big twists and even ending on a death. So we might all still be in for a shocker. Keep those fingers crossed as we wait for more details to emerge about Modern Family season 10.
