The Masked Singer episode 5 continued the bonkers adventure on Wednesday, as four of the remaining eight mystery competitors took to the stage to once again perform, and hopefully, continue puzzling the audience and judges’ panel alike. Much like every week, the show once again gave viewers and the celebrity panelists — Nicole Scherzinger, Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong — a chance to make their best, and craziest, guesses. The Poodle joined the ranks of unmasked singers last week as the costumed celebrity was revealed as none other than comedian Margaret Cho, who mostly surprised Jeong as she starred opposite him in the short-lived ABC sitcom, Dr. Ken.
This time around, The Rabbit, The Unicorn, The Alien and The Lion all returned to the stage to showcase their varied musical talents. With a new clue component added to the show, finding each contestant bringing out a “revealing item” to help the judges with their guesses, and an opening group performance of “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons, which found the four masked celebs performing together with full choreography, everyone was still asking: Who is The Masked Singer? The Rabbit poisons the judges on The Masked Singer episode 5
Each week, The Rabbit has shown different aspects of his personality all with the goal of keeping the judges on their confused toes. This week, in his pre-taped segment, he delivered a few new clues which seemed to help absolutely no one.
“I’ve done Latin pop, then Country twang, Y’all, and tonight I’m gonna try to confuse the panel again,” The Rabbit told the camera, before he identified himself as a trickster — the on-camera imagery showed him disappearing and reappearing all over the place. “Chew on this,” he said to camera, “I’m about to bust out all the old-school moves. Just wait.” The segment ended with The Rabbit working in what looks like a pizza parlor with a sign on the window reading, “Brooklyn Pizza Available.”
For his musical number, The Rabbit performed Bell Biv DeVoe’s ’90s R&B hit, “Poison.” All the judges gave him praise but when his revealing item turned out to be a magician’s kit, our panelists are once again confused. After Ken had a bit of a nervous breakdown, he suggested it could be New Kids on the Block member, and Jenny McCarthy’s husband, Donnie Wahlberg. Another guess dug into the ’90s boy band theme with the name Joey McIntire being thrown into the mix. And to keep things interesting, McCarthy suggested it could be country star Zac Brown.
The Unicorn finds her voice on The Masked Singer episode 5
In her pre-taped clue segment, The Unicorn confessed, “Performing in front of people has always been my biggest fear.” As we see an orange TV in the background, the camera panned by five little unicorns. She continued, explaining the growth she’d gone through on the show and how each week her confidence has strengthened before saying, “I’m proud of the hills I come from.”
Her performance of “I Love It” by Icona Pop (featuring Charli XCX) was the most energetic of her previous times on the show’s stage. Ken Jeong praised her for her emotional growth, referring to what she’s been through on the series as “therapy.” Her revealing item ended up being a typewriter which she said, “created a lot of magic.” This sort of threw everyone off. Jenny McCarthy ended up guessing it was The Hills star Lauren Conrad while Nicole Scherzinger stuck to her assertion that The Unicorn was the newest addition to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Charlie Sheen’s ex, Denise Richards.
The Alien is here to ‘serve and protect’ on The Masked Singer episode 5
The new clues revealed in The Alien’s intro clip found the mystery singer admitting, “I spent my entire life under a microscope, poked and prodded.” While saying she “always craved the simple life” growing up, we see a picnic scene play out as more snake imagery passed by on camera.
For this week’s performance, The Alien sang “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Her singing voice really wowed the judges this time, subsequently throwing everyone into a confused state once more. Her revealing item ended up being a police badge from Muncie, Indiana, which she tells the judges is completely real and not a prop. Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and LaToya Jackson wound up being the strongest guesses here. Britney Spears and Paula Abdul were also thrown into the mix.
The Lion isn’t (but maybe is) Kesha on The Masked Singer episode 5
The last singer of the evening was The Lion, who in her pre-taped segment, admitted to being disappointed with her previous performance which prompted Nicole to voice she didn’t believe the mystery personality was a professional singer. This week, though, the tables turned on the judges as The Lion came out with a stellar performance of “California Dreamin'” by Sia. In the opening clip, she mentioned The Wizard of Oz was her favorite movie, giving a warning to everyone that a storm was coming. She then said she’s here to prove that being on stage is her “destiny” before admitting her home is on stage, saying, “tick tock, it’s about time for me to let out my roar.”
Without skipping a beat, Robin suggested it was someone from Destiny’s Child before later mentioning Michelle Williams’ name. But he also suggested it could be Kesha under the mask, given the possible reference to the singer’s hit song, “Tik-Tok.” Jenny McCarthy seconds that by suggesting it could be someone who has worked with Kesha but doesn’t go so far as to suggest it could actually be Kesha. And when The Lion brings out a scrunchie as her revealing item, calling it “a family heirloom,” Nicole randomly guessed it was Spice Girl Mel B. in that costume, leaving everyone else to scratch their heads.
The Unicorn gets unmasked, revealing who was The Masked Singer
In the end, The Unicorn was revealed as the singer. Before she took off her mask, the judges gave their final guesses. For some reason, Robin Thicke thought it was Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas. Jenny McCarthy again suggested it was Lauren Conrad and Nicole Scherzinger repeated her guess that it was Denise Richards. After all his confusion in this episode, Ken Jeong came in with the right answer as he said it was Tori Spelling. Lo’ and behold, Tori Spelling was indeed under the mask!
“This, right now, performing in front of people, is my biggest fear in life,” she admitted. Telling the judges that a moment from her childhood, where she was told she was a tone-deaf singer, stayed with her so her time on the show was really important to her. “I love singing with my kids and I wanted them to know that they could be whatever they wanted to be,” Spelling continued. As for the typewriter? It turns out that was her father Aaron Spelling’s preferred writing tool, in which he penned many of his iconic television shows, including Beverly Hills, 90210 — the show Tori became famous for.
With just seven mystery contestants remaining, The Masked Singer is sure to only get more entertaining as the season continues. Do you know who is under the remaining masks?
