Sharknado 6: Everything we know about The Last Sharknado

Author Steve Alten, whose book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, inspired the Jason Statham giant shark movie The Meg, recently spoke to Metro about the possibility of its becoming a “billion dollar franchise.” Judging by the movie’s box office so far, he’s not wrong, but Alten is forgetting one thing. A massively popular franchise about people fighting off killer sharks already exists, and it’s back with Sharknado 6. Here’s everything we know about The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time.

What is Sharknado 6 about?

The first entry did okay when it premiered on Syfy, but Twitter trends and word of mouth quickly increased the 2013 film’s profile – so much that subsequent airings and a brief theatrical release ensured at least one sequel would result. Five years later, Sharknado 6, aka The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time, the final film by the B-movie powerhouse studio The Asylum, is set to premiere this weekend.

Yes, that’s right. There is yet another movie about a fictionalized freak act of nature through which a waterspout lifts massive, people-eating sharks out of the ocean and redistributes them in populated areas. Since 2013, a sequel has debuted (Sharknado 2: The Second One, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming) every year on Syfy. And while each one has upped the ante and the ridiculousness to even greater heights, Sharknado 6 promises to be the silliest one yet.

Series regulars Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and Cassie Scerbo, who play April Shephard, Fin Shephard and Nova Clarke, are all back for the trio’s final adventure, which sees them trying to reset history following the dystopian cliffhanger Global Swarming ended with. In other words, if the It’s About Time subtitle wasn’t a clue, then yes, the sixth Sharknado will involve time travel.

Will there be a Sharknado 7?

According to the official logline:

Our hero Fin (Ian Ziering) has battled sharks all over the globe, but in this last installment he will tackle the final shark-tier — time travel. In the ending moments of Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, Fin was seen wandering alone on Earth after it was destroyed. Now he must travel back in time to stop the Sharknado that started it all. Will Fin and the gang be able to set everything right and save the world once and for all?

Directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, who has directed all six TV movies, and written by Sharknado 5 co-writer Scotty Mullen, Sunday’s absurd conclusion pretty much takes all of the major facets employed by popular, genre-heavy superhero and science fiction properties and mashes them together.

That being said, Ferrante and the principal cast revealed at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con that The Last Sharknado will end much like the series finale of a TV show, with most of the major loose ends being tied up and all of the unanswered questions being addressed. What’s more, the director added that he and the creative team “knew [the ending] two movies ago.”

So at least there won’t be a Sharknado 7 anytime soon… unless “he Last Sharknado ends up pulling in ludicrous numbers for Syfy.
