In a move that will surprise no-one, Netflix has greenlit Stranger Things season 3, even though we still have over two months to wait until its second season airs.
Considering how insanely successful Stranger Things’ debut outing was for the streaming website last year, it’s easy to see why they have jumped the gun and announced a third season so early. Co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed over the weekend that a third season of Stranger Things will be released, before then devastatingly teasing that their current plan is to end it after four.
“We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out,” Ross Duffer told Vulture. His brother Matt did leave some wiggle room, though, but still conceded that it might become a stretch for the leading foursome to get into trouble on a yearly basis. “We just have to keep adjusting the story,” Matt admitted. “Though I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year.”
While the tease of its eventual conclusion is obviously upsetting, this amount of forward planning means that a third season of Stranger Things should arrive in a prompter fashion that its immediate predecessor. While Stranger Things’ success was apparent immediately after it was released in July 2016, Netflix didn’t announce a second season until the end of August. That has meant that we’ve had to wait over 15 months for the follow-up.
The fact that the Duffer Brothers already have plans for a third and fourth season suggests that the writing of these episodes shouldn’t take quite as long, while Netflix will already be eager for production to begin so that they can fully capitalize on its popularity. We’ll have a better idea of what’s in store for the Stranger Things gang when its second season is finally made available to binge on October 27, 2017.
