Everything you need to know about Miss America 2018 winner Cara Mund

Last night, Miss North Dakota Cara Mund made history when she was crowned 2018 Miss America. It was the first time in the history of the pageant that a contestant from North Dakota was awarded the crown.

This year’s judges panel was made up of singer Jordiwait n Sparks, TV personality Maria Menounos, Olympian figure skater Tara Lipinski, country singer Thomas Rhett,  model Molly Sims,  Jess Cagle of People Magazine and former Miss America Nina Davuluri.

After three days of showcasing her talents during the preliminary rounds, 23-year-old  Cara Mund from Bismark, North Dakota was named Miss America, taking home the crown a $50,000 scholarship and earn a six-figure salary for being Miss America in 2018.

Here are a few things to know about Miss America 2018 Cara Mund because we’re guaranteed to see much more of her in many years to come. 

1. Cara Mund is a Brown University graduate

Cara Mund is an Ivy League Honors Graduate from Brown University where she earned her degree in Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations.

While at Brown, she was the President, of the Kappa Delta Sorority, director of the Fusion Dance Company and participated in the National Collegiate Cheer Competition.

She has plans to attend law school and will attend the University of Notre Dame. 

2. Cara Mund wants to be the governor of North Dakota

Aside from graduating with honors from Brown University, the 23-year-old Miss America winner wants to become the first woman governor of her home state North Dakota.  She also comes from a family of firsts. According to her bio on the Miss America website, she is related to Victoria Clafin Woodhull – the first woman to run for U.S President, the fist woman to operate a brokerage firm on Wall Street, and one of the first women to start a newspaper. There’s no surprise that leadership is in her blood. 

3. She loves giving back

Cara Mund has partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in North Dakota for the past t10 years, according to the Bismarck Tribune. During that time, she raised over $78,000 and granted 23 wishes for children in North Dakota who have life-threatening medical cond During the preliminary competition of the Miss America pageant, she was selected as a finalist for the Jean Bartel Quality of Life Award for her dedication and commitment to community service.

4. She’s been dancing all her life

Mund, who was a national dance champion in college, had the chance to showcase her moves in the talent competition segment during the Miss America pageant. She wowed the crowd with a jazz dance routine to Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.” She has been dancing since 1996 and participated in several talent showcases as a child and through college. She also spent four summers training with the Radio City Rockettes.

5. She’s not afraid to express her views about the Trump Administration

During the Miss America pageant Mund was asked about Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord and she voiced her opinion and said it was wrong to remove the U.S. out of the negotiations. I do believe it’s a bad decision,” she said during the Q & A segment of the show. “Once we reject that, we take ourselves out of the negotiation table, and that’s something that we really need to keep in mind. There is evidence that climate change is existing, so whether you believe it or not, we need to be at that table, and I think it’s just a bad decision on behalf of the United States.”
