The Super Bowl LIII telecast featured a treasure trove of expensive commercials, both known and unknown, on Sunday. Chief among them was a 30-second ad for Hulu’s award-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale, which stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes and many others in a dystopian tale of a near-future America. The spot didn’t reveal when The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 would premiere, of course, but did offer viewers some new footage.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 trailer
The teaser trailer is inspired by President Ronald Reagan’s “It’s Morning Again In America” commercial from his 1984 reelection campaign. In fact, it even sounds like the narration being used in the spot is the exact same that Reagan himself read for his TV spot over 30 years ago. “It’s morning again in America,” he says. “Today, more women will go to work than ever before in our country’s history. This year, dozens of children will be born to happy and healthy families.”
As beautiful as Reagan’s words sound, however, The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 trailer quickly contrasts it with horrifying imagery from the series. Fans familiar with the story will already know that following an unknown apocalypse, the fascist and misogynist nation of Gilead now reigns supreme. Women capable of bearing children, like Ross’s character June Osborne, are treated like cattle by the patriarchal society under the guise of recovering humanity’s numbers.
What to know about The Handmaid’s Tale season 3
At the end of season 2, Emily (Alexis Bledel) escapes with June’s daughter Nichole, but June decides to stay behind at the last second. It’s one of many gut-wrenching moments throughout the series, and according to a press release from Hulu, The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 will feature many more.
Season Three of The Handmaid’s Tale is driven by June’s resistance to the dystopian regime of Gilead and her struggle to strike back against overwhelming odds. Startling reunions, betrayals, and a journey to the terrifying heart of Gilead force all characters to take a stand, guided by one defiant prayer: “Blessed be the fight.”
When does The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 premiere?
The Super Bowl spot simply indicates that The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is “coming soon,” but offers little by way of details. Since seasons 1 and 2 both premiered in late April, however, audiences can safely bet that the latest installment of the popular drama will debut sometime during the final week of April this year.
