Get those dollar bills ready, because a musical based on the hit Magic Mike films will soon hit the stage in Boston. The production will make its debut in the Hub later this year before heading for Broadway, so local fans will get the first glimpse at what could be the hottest musical of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about the Magic Mike Musical.
What is the Magic Mike Musical about?
According to a press release, the Magic Mike Musical will center around “college-student-turned-male-entertainer Mike Lane,” aka the fan-favorite stripper made famous on the big screen by Channing Tatum. The production will be a prequel of sorts, set before the events of Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL. The Magic Mike Musical will explore Lane’s first foray into the world of exotic dancing and his struggles to hide his new profession from his loved ones.
The upcoming musical is the latest stage production based on the hit films, which were partly inspired by Tatum’s past as a stripper in Florida. A Magic Mike Live nightclub show is currently heating things up in Las Vegas and London. Between the movies and live shows, the Magic Mike franchise has brought in more than $335 million so far.
Who’s in the Magic Mike Musical cast, crew?
While the cast for the Magic Mike Musical hasn’t been revealed yet, an all-star crew of producers and writers is set to bring the production to life. While fans likely won’t get to see Tatum show off his moves on stage, he will be serving as a producer on the show alongside Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first Magic Mike movie, as well as Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan.
The musical will feature an original score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award-winning duo behind Next to Normal, while the book is being penned by Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Trip Cullman of Choir Boy fame has been tapped to direct, with Camille A. Brown of Once On This Island providing the choreography.
“When we were shooting Magic Mike, I looked at myself in a thong and thought: ‘well Chan, say goodbye to your career!’ So the idea that seven years later a Pulitzer Prize-winning creative team would be making a full-fledged musical prequel is definitive proof that God loves strippers,” Tatum said in a press release. “I couldn’t be more excited about the next chapter in the Magic Mike story. So get ready, Boston. The road to Broadway begins on November 30!”
When does Magic Mike Musical premiere?
The musical will hold preview performances beginning on Nov. 30, while the show will officially kick off its run at the Emerson Colonial Theatre on Dec. 15. The Magic Mike Musical will set up shop in Boston through Jan. 5, 2020, so fans will have plenty of chances to spice up their holidays this winter.
