Five years ago, New Zealand comedy duo Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s film What We Do in the Shadows was released to wide acclaim. Since then, the pair has gone on to write, direct and act in various film and TV projects, but now they’re coming back to the documentary-style world their supernatural comedy created. On Monday, FX released the first full trailer for the new What We Do in the Shadows TV show. They also revealed its release date.
What We Do in the Shadows TV Show trailer
Written and produced by Clement and Waititi, the What We Do in the Shadows TV show adapts the film’s story for a group of longterm vampiric roommates living out in Staten Island. Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry and Natasia Demetriou play Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja, three vampires who’ve been living together for centuries. Harvey Guillén stars as Guillermo, Nandor’s human familiar who protects his master during the daytime and hopes to one day become a vampire himself.
Mark Proksch and Beanie Feldstein also star as Colin Robinson and Jenna respectively. Colin is an “energy vampire” who drains his victims not with fangs, but with boredom and irritation. Jenna, meanwhile, is a friend of Nadja who may or may not be turning into a flesh-eating zombie. Like the film, the What We Do in the Shadows TV show will also feature a local gang of werewolves who constantly taunt their vampiric neighbors.
According to a press release from FX:
After an unexpected visit from their dark lord and leader, “Baron Afanas,” the vampires are reminded of what they were initially tasked with upon their arrival in Staten Island over a hundred years ago — total and complete domination of the New World. But what exactly is the best way to go about achieving said domination? Our vérité camera crew follows along as the vampires set out to answer this query.
