The D.C. crowd could learn much from my old hometown of New Orleans: how to laugh, how to dance, how to make friends of enemies, and even how to take bribes better. As it is, I’ll just have to content myself with a bayou theme for my look at three things to watch this week in politics. 1. WAY DOWN YONDER IN NEW ORLEANS: President Obama will do the Mardi Gras mambo all the way to the Crescent City, but it won’t be just for the po’boys and jazz. He’ll be there to mark the 10th anniversary of Katrina, which took more than 1,800 lives. Expect the prez to focus on how the region — including the stricken Gulf Coast — has bounced back with a lot of help from the feds. He may even mention (as he has in the past) how government failures contributed to the levee collapses that made it the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. And don’t be surprised if he tips his hat to the role of global warming in the whole mess. 2. VOODOO CHILD: All eyes will be on the stock market to see if its mojo is working again. Someone must have put gris-gris on their wingtips because the Wall Street crew has taken stocks into a deep dive. The main worries are that China’s economy is softening, oil prices are drifting down and interest rates could be in for a correction. So like everything else with the market, it’s essentially voodoo. But if it doesn’t bounce back, watch for Republican candidates to swarm and say it’s another sign of the White House’s weak recovery. 3. PROFESSOR LONG HAIR: And Donald Trump will do something outrageous. I don’t know what. Pretty sure he doesn’t know either. But he’ll do it, we’ll cover it, you’ll discuss it and we’ll all hate ourselves in the morning. Bartender, can I get another Sazerac down here?
