Fourth person died as result of Legionnaires’ outbreak

A fourth person has died as a result of theLegionnaires’ outbreak in the Bronx. All the deceased individuals were older adults and had additional underlying medical problems, officials said.

As od Sunday, a total of 65 people have been diagnosed with the disease, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

In addition, out of the 17 buildings with cooling towers that were tested, five have tested positive: a Verizon office, Streamline Plastic Co., Lincoln Hospital, Concourse Plaza and Opera House Hotel.

Remediation is complete at four of the five locations; Streamline Plastic Co. began remediation and is expected to be complete by this afternoon, according to the Health Department.

All sites will be required to submit long-term plans explaining how they plan to maintain the cooling towers to protect against any future growth of legionella.
