Game Of Thrones’ penultimate season came to an end on Sunday, and boy did it not disappoint. Not only did it bring all of its main characters together for a tense stand-off to discuss how to deal with the marching Night King, but Dany and Jon’s sexual tension finally came to a head, Littlefinger got his comeuppance, and then the undead version of Viserion destroyed The Wall with relative ease.
But while all of that was undeniably pulsating to watch, there was one moment in Game Of Thrones that left fans livid, as Samwell Tarly told Bran that Rhaegar Targaryen had annulled his marriage to Elia Martell, and then Rhaegar married Lyanna Stark in a secret ceremony in Dorne. Sam had learnt this from reading the journal of High Septon Maynard, who had issued the original annulment.
However, Game Of Thrones fans were incensed because it wasn’t actually Sam that had learnt about this annulment, it was his Gilly. Rather than giving her any credit for the discovery, Sam claimed it himself, and, as a result, felt the full ire of the internet.

Also, Sam being a typical man and taking credit for reading about Rhaegar/Lyanna when it was Gilly who found it. ? #really #GameOfThrones

For people who think #GameOfThrones isn’t realistic, have you not seen the part where a man, Sam, takes credit for a woman’s work? #GoTS7 pic.twitter.com/gOoxrZPlsv

There’s every chance that Sam will finally confirm that Gilly was the one who actually unearthed this huge revelation, which means that Jon Snow is actually called Aegon Targaryen, is the true heir to the Iron Throne, and just had sex with his aunt, when he returns to Winterfell. But at that point Jon Snow will probably be a little bit preoccupied with the fact that he just committed incest, while the imminent arrival of the Night King and his zombified dragon to Winterfell will give him plenty more to ponder, too.
We have quite a while to wait for Jon Snow to learn about his parentage, too, as Game Of Thrones reportedly won’t be back on our screens for its final season until 2019.
