Game of Thrones fans are still trying to come to terms with the reality that the next season of the HBO epic will be its last. But while the saga of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister is coming to an end very soon, there are still huge plans afoot for delving back into the world on a regular basis. So much so that a fifth Game of Thrones spin off series has now been confirmed.
Entertainment Weekly have confirmed that Bryan Cogman, who has worked as a co-executive producer and is the third most prolific writer on the series having penned 10 episodes, is working alongside Game of Thrones creator and author George R.R. Martin on the prequel series. This now means that Cogman is involved in three out of the five proposed Game of Thrones spin off series.
As you probably expected, released details surrounding the latest Game of Thrones project are being kept at a minimum. Martin made a reference to a potential fifth spin off on his blog several months ago, however he also insisted that he didn’t think the term really applied “to these new projects.”
Martin continued, “What we’re talking about are new stories set in the ‘secondary universe’ (to borrow Tolkien’s term) of Westeros and the world beyond, the world I created for A Song Of Ice And Fire. It is a world, and a pretty big one.”
During this post Martin also explained that while five pilot scripts have been ordered, he doesn’t actually know how many of them will be filmed, and he doesn’t expect all of these to make it to air. Martin has already revealed that none of the series will revolve around Robert’s Rebellion, as he insisted that, by the end of his series of novels, the topic will have been covered in too much detail. They will instead be about brand new characters.
Before then, though, Game of Thrones will come to an end with its eighth season in around a year’s time, while Martin will, hopefully, finish his book “Winds of Winter” sometime soon, too.
