Gang member sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for killing bystander outside Brooklyn barbershop

A Brooklyn man will spend a minimum of the next three decades behind bars for killing an innocent bystander when he attempted to shoot members of a rival gang, according to authorities.

Breeze King, 22, was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on Feb. 26 after being convicted on Jan. 28 on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

According to prosecutors, on Sept. 28, 2011 at about 5:30 p.m. King — who is a member of a gang — encountered two gang rivals on a Brooklyn street and began shooting at them.

One of the men ran into a barbershop at 358 Marcus Garvey Blvd., authorities said, and at that time 79-year-old Andrew Burke– who had been standing in front of the barbershop — was struck in the neck and then died from the gunshot wound.

About a year after the incident, a witness came forward and identified King as the shooter, prosecutors said. Another witness also added that King admitted to his role in the shooting when they were both in custody at Rikers Island.

“We will not allow gang members to settle their scores by shooting guns in our streets and the long sentence this defendant deservedly received shows our commitment to vigorously prosecute anyone who does,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said.
