Giants players back teammate Josh Brown despite disturbing abuse details

Josh Brown’steammates are cautiously behind the New York Giants kicker, this as new revelations emerged on Thursday regarding his alleged spousal abuse of his ex-wife.

The Giants released a statement on Thursday ahead of their flight to London for a game against the Los Angeles Rams, saying that Brown will not be traveling with the team. Thursday’s court documents included disturbing entries from Brown’s journal, including one section where he wrote, “I have abused my wife.”

It is a tough thing for the Giants locker room to come to grips with given that Brown was so widely respected and is one of the best kickers in the NFL.

His teammates backed Brown to a man.

“I know Josh Brown. I know him personally. He’s like a brother. We have Bible studies here. He’s the leader of that group. It’s hurtful what he’s going through but I’m definitely here for him. He’s helped me grow a lot from being a man off the field,” cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie said. “I’ve learned a lot from him. To just see what he’s going through, I’m hurt for him. I’m here if he needs a shoulder, a hug or just to talk. I definitely know the kind of man that he is. I know that’s not him. I know the things I’ve learned from him.”

There was no dissension among the Giants in terms of unwavering support for Brown as a man and a teammate. No one condoned his actions and the re-opening of the NFL’s investigation into the matter but they stood by the man and teammate that they’ve grown to respect.

Brown had originally served a one-game suspension at the start of the season stemming from these incidents. Now new information might lead to further ramifications including his release.

“As a teammate, he is my teammate and that is all I know,” wide receiver Victor Cruz said. “His personal life is his personal life, but when he is in these doors and in this locker room, he is our teammate and that is the only thing we can go by.”
