High school senior Siobhan O’Dell may not have succeeded on her first try, but she won’t take no for an answer from her dream school, Duke University. Or at least, that’s what she says in her letter. When Duke sent O’Dell her a rejection letter, the student responded in a very unusual manner. She wrote back, ” Despite Duke’s outstanding success in rejecting previous applicants, you simply did not meet my qualifications … Therefore, I will be attending Duke University’s 2015 freshmen class. I look forward to seeing you then.” It’s not as “Single White Female” as it sounds. O’Dell seems to have simply written the letter as a joke more than thana serious attempt to get back in the school’s good graces. An admission officer already responded to O’Dell and wrote that she could appeal the decision but that it is very rare these appeals are successful.
O’Dell seems pleased that she will attend another school: the University of South Carolina. She will study biology and mathematics.
She wrote of her disappointment at not getting into Duke: “I have a 4.76 weighted, an SAT score of 2040 and i go to a private school. Lol our valedictorian didnt even get in its so f–ing hard, but you might as well try.” At the end of the day, O’Dell is still a kid: She wrote on Tumblr that her guidance counselor is making her send an apology note to Duke.
