Surprise, Awards Season is upon us, with this morning’s announcement of the Golden Globe nominations kicking things off in earnest. There are some delightful surprises — like nominations for “Mad Max: Fury Road” and its visionary director, George Miller — as well as some less-than-delightful omissions. While everyone has their own opinion about what the best show on television might be, it seems highly strange that “Mad Men” wouldn’t earn a nod for Best Television Drama its final year, while “Mr. Robot,” “Narcos” and “Outlander” — seriously? — squeezed in. RELATED: Why are this year’s Oscar contenders actually making me cry? On the film side, the nominations come on a wave of yet more controversy over what should be considered a Musical or Comedy and what should be considered a Drama. David O. Russell once again shrewdly put his film — this year, “Joy” — in the Comedy side, netting nominations for the film and star Jennifer Lawrence. And while there might be some debate as to whether “The Martian” or “The Big Short” are really comedies either, it’s nice to see “Trainwreck” and “Spy” on the list.
