Guinness World Records crowns new oldest living cat

There must be something cats love aboutTexas — because the state is once again home to a record-breaking feline.

Guinness World Records announced on Tuesday that Scooter, a 30-year-old Siamese from Mansfield, Texas, has been confirmed as the new oldest living cat.

Scooter has lived with his owner, Gail Floyd, since he was born on March 26, 1986, and has “been right by her side ever since,” according to Guinness and family photos of the cat.

As seen in one of those photos, Scooter, as a kitten would ride on Floyd’s shoulder and also liked to play in her hair. Despite his age, he still wakes his owner up every morning at 6 a.m. “talkingand jumping around, and is always waiting by the door when she arrives home from work.” He also enjoys getting blow dried after a bath and his favorite snack, chicken, which he’s treated to every other day.

Floyd believes keeping Scooter active is what keeps him happy and alive.

“He likes to see new places and he likes people,” Floyd said, referring to Scooter’s travels to 45 of the 50states and visits to the nursing home where her mom lives.

Scooter has also survived some trauma early and latein his long life. At 4 weeks he lost his mother and in October 2014 he broke his leg.

He has been undergoing medical testing and treatment ever since, but his veterinarians say he is “quite an amazing cat, with a strong will to live.”

Scooter’s 30 years beat the previous record-holder, 26-year-old Corduroy, from Sisters, Oregon. Although he is currently the oldest living cat, Scooter is still several years short of the record for the oldest cat ever.

Crème Puff of Austin, Texas lived 38 years 3 days — more than double the average life expectancy of the species.
