The company that owns Shaws and Star Market, which has stores throughout eastern Massachusetts, announced a recent attempted intrusion seeking payment card information.
AB Acquisition LLC, which operates the supermarket chain, announced that malware was detected, and the program may have captured account numbers, expiration dates and other information, including names, of customers.
The company said federal law enforcement was notified.
On Aug. 14, AB Acquisition LLC announced an earlier intrusion seeking out payment card information, while stating it is “confident that its customers can safely use their credit and debit cards in its stores.”
The earlier intrusion was estimated to have occurred between June 22 and July 17, while the latest intrusion occurred in late August or early September.
“We know our customers are concerned about the security of their payment card data, and we work hard to protect it,” said AB Acquisition Chief Information Officer Bob Miller in a statement.
“As soon as we were notified of the incident, we began working closely with SUPERVALU to determine what happened. It’s important to note that there is no evidence at this point that consumer data has been misused.”
