Back in 2002, Halle Berry made history when she became the first black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress. Unfortunately, no African-American females have taken the trophy since. With the 2016 Academy Awards only a few weeks away, the #OscarsSoWhite movement has everyone talking. Berry says she’s heartbroken about the lack of diversity among the nominees.

At Tuesday’s Makers Conference, Berry said, “To sit here almost 15 years later, and knowing that another woman of color has not walked through that door, is heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking because I thought that moment was bigger than me… Maybe it wasn’t.”

Given all the recent backlash, the Academy pledged to double its membership of women and minorities by 2020. In the meantime, Berry went on to say that filmmakers today aren’t“truthful,” because “they’re not really depicting the importance and the involvement and the participation of people of color in our American culture.”

Kudos to Berry for joining the long line of celebrities speaking up — from Jada Pinkett Smith to Spike Lee to George Clooney.
