It’s official: Mindy Kaling is now a mother. Aw!
E! News reports that the 38-year-old actress/writer/kween welcomed a daughter, Katherine Kaling, on December 15.
When news broke about Kaling’s pregnancy in July, a source told E! News that it was “an unexpected surprise.” Kaling has declined to identify the father of her child, but said on the Today show that she was “really excited” about the experience.
“It’s so unknown to me,” she said. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects in my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling.”
She also joked about being able to finally criticize other people with babies. Isn’t that why people procreate in the first place? “It’s so easy to criticize parenting until you’re a parent,” she said. “So one of the nice things about becoming a parent is that I’ll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child.”
Kaling had been largely mum during the pregnancy, instead letting the likes of Oprah and her “Mindy Project” co-stars to do the talking for her.
Beth Grant, who plays the unhinged-but-in-a-cute-way Beverly, got emotional, saying “I cried like a baby and that it’s a girl. I just think that she’s up to it. I just think that she’s ready, and I’m very happy for her.”
Ed Weeks, who plays the delightfully absurd Jeremy — “The Mindy Project” was truly a cast of very sitcom-y characters — noted that having a girl is a bit full circle for Kaling. The show started as a tribute to her mother, who passed away just as the show is being picked up, and it ends with her having a daughter of her own. It’s a lot,” he explained.
“When she reminded us all of that, we all cried in the final table read. I mean, Jesus, life! It makes some very interesting and beautiful patterns sometimes.” Aw, what a guy!
Congratulations, Mindy! The name Katherine Kaling is classy AF. You did good, babe.
